STILL ALL-SQUARE IN CUP BATTLE

Chelmsley Town 1 Sutton Town 1

Destination of the Coleshill Charity Cup is still undecided after a second meeting between Chelmsley Town and Sutton Town.

Following their earlier 2-2 draw, the two Midland Combination sides battled their way through another 90 minutes and 20 minutes of extra time to a 1-1 draw and another replay at Pack Meadow.

​Defences dominated in a goalless first half but Chelmsley broke the deadlock despite some clear-cut chances for goals.

The match, played in front of more than 100 fans, including Gil Merrick manager of Atherstone Town and former Birmingham City and England goalkeeper, provoked some nostalgic reminiscences.

Recollections such as the 1926-27 final which ended evenly after one replay, the Cup being held for six months by each team, a feat never repeated, and the fact that no-one could remember a final needing a second replay, were heard.

As the inevitability of another draw drew closer, it was suggested that the two sides might like to make it a permanent summer fixture.

Proceeds from the gate will benefit the charities supported by the Coleshill Charity Cup committee, and bar receipts will assist the ground development of Coleshill Town, whose manager, Arthur Mullard, predicts will be the best club in the Midland Combination within the next two years.

After the work which has gone into establishing Pack Meadow over the last fifteen months, and the fine run in Division Two of the Midland Combination this season, Coleshill eagerly await the result of their application for first division status, which should be decided within the next fortnight.
