Reserve Team Assistant Manager: Keith 'Percy' Parfitt
This year sees Chelmsley Town playing in the Premier Division of the Midland Combination for the first time in the clubs history. This follows promotion from Division One after winning the title last year.
Supporters will notice that a great deal of work has been done at the ground during the close season. The clubhouse has been extended and new dressing rooms have been built together with a new stand. The improvements have been carried out by a small dedicated team of committee men, supporters and several players. Work is continuing and any help would be appreciated.
This year also sees the introduction of a Reserve team which will play in Division Two of the Midland Combination. This is a step forward for the Club and we are hopeful that it will lead to a number of youngsters moving through to challenge for first team places. The Reserves will be run by Ray South, Keith 'Percy' Parfitt and Tony Brown. 13th August sees their first game away at Earlswood Town.
Obviously the first aim is to consolidate our newly gained playing status, for both first and second teams and in the future years, to hopefully, improve both our Clubroom, ground and playing facilities.
Our short term objective is to totally enclose the ground and improve the spectator facilities further. The club has been financially assisted over the past few months by Steeles our local Estate Agents who have purchased the new home playing strip and provided funds towards the improvements made at the ground, and we are extremely grateful to them for their support.
Both first and second teams have been supplied with track tops purchased by Breken Consultants, Mortgage Brokers, who like Steeles are a local company offering first class, speedy service. If you are looking for houses in the area, Peter Steele, who will be pleased to help or if Mortgages, Pensions and Insurance generally is required, Ken Phipps at Breken will be available. Lastly we offer our thanks to Ansells Brewery who have assisted in making all the Ground improvements possible by the support over many years.

MANAGERS COMMENTS
We have had some mixed results in the pre-season games and have experimented with a number of players. However, last weeks 1-0 win over Birmingham City's Youth Team have the lads a very good work out in the extremely hot conditions. The result was all the more pleasing since the same Blues team had previously beaten Highgate United 4-1.
MAYHEM AS YOBS RUN ROIT
At Marston Green, near Birmingham, a pre season football friendly between a Birmingham City youth side and Chelmsley Town was called off five minutes before the end when drunken youths set fire to a corner flag.

MANAGER COMMENTS
Against Evesham on Saturday a reshuffled team showed that despite the apparent heavy defeat we are not that far away from being able to compete successfully at this level. I thought that the 4-0 scoreline was particularly harsh given that Evesham did not break through for the first goals until the 62nd minute. However the game demonstrated the need to concentrate for 90 minutes as Evesham added 3 late goals. The debating point after the match was whether we should have made as substitution with the score at 0-0. Despite the result there were some encouraging signs to build on.
A number of younger players with the club are showing good form and I intend to continue to give some and opportunity to prove themselves. Les Carroll played last week at full back and did very well for us and this week further youngsters have been added to the squad.

MANAGER COMMENTS
Last weeks 2-0 defeat against Bolehall Swifts leaves us rooted firmly at the wrong end of the table. As with previous games, we had to change the side around to the unavailability of four players. Despite this, the team battled well and but for a little more luck in front of goal the result could have gone the other way. The first goal was the result of a poor back pass and the second owed much to static defence. The match followed a similar pattern in that yet again we were punished for our mistakes whilst not being able to put the ball in the net ourselves. The encouraging sign was the performance of some of the younger players drafted in from the Reserves.

PROGRAMME NOTES
The first team managed to secure another two points on their travels at Highgate United. Two first half goals by Dave Keen and Sherland Harewood set us up nicely, but Highgate put in a strong finish scoring 11 minutes from time to set up a grandstand finish. It was our fourth away win of the season yet we have still to win at home in the league.
MANAGERS COMMENTS
Last Saturday, I thought we played some of our best football in patches and defended very well to soak up early Highgate pressure. We broke away from defence well on several occasions before Dave Keen finished off a fine move to put us 1-0 ahead. Shortly before half time Sherland Harewood rose unchallenged to head home a corner to make it 2-0. After the interval Highgate continued to push forward in search of goals but were comfortably contained until 11 minutes from time. This set up a nail biting finish but we hung on to gain a well deserved win. Again due to injuries we had to shuffle the side but this didn't show in our performance. I don't think I have ever known such a start to the season where every week, for whatever reason, we seem to have to change the team. Nonetheless, the squad is now settling down and I am quite pleased with the way some of the younger players like Steve Grady and Warren Badger have fitted in.

In - Form Chelmsley Hold Hinckley In Thriller
Hinckley gained another point away from home when they visited a Chelmsley side which although lower in the Midland Combination Premier Division had won their previous three games.
Although goal-less this was a highly entertaining game with both teams committed to open football. Manager Bill Moore replaced Pete Savage with Nick Stanborough gave Oliver Waelle his second game of the season in centre midfield and replaced Andy Wilson up front with Kirsten May in a 4-3-3 formation.
While Canaries may have been disappointed not to register another away win they will be heartened by yet another good team performance.
Away from home they have now collected 13 points out of 20 available The next two Saturdays see them at home to Stratford and Chelmsley again two games which on paper they should win and must if their ambition of Beazer Homes soccer is to succeed.
Canaries enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges and the first real chance fell to Kevin Johnson who shot over the bar then Hedgecock hit straight at keeper McGetherick from a Karl Johnson cross.
CAME INTO GAME
Gradually the home team came more into the game and in the 19th minute Canaries' keeper Bray was forced to dive full length to turn a blistering 20 yard drive by Thompson round the post From the resultant corner Harewood hooked over in a goalmouth scramble.
Another 20 yard piledriver by Thompson flashed wide of the Canaries' post but generally defences were on top at this stage.
In the final minute of the half a great run by Power from deep inside in his own half resulted in Kevin Johnson who headed inches over.
If the first half was even the second was not as the Canaries stepped up a gear and totally dominated play Three minutes into the halt a Moore free kick to the far side of the box found Hedgecock whose ferocious drive flashed across the goal hit the far post and was scrambled clear.
Hedgecock was then close from a Karl Johnson cross and then Kevin Johnson put two long range efforts just over. SHOULD HAVE SCORED
In the 63rd minute Canaries should have scored Karl Johnson found Power overlapping on the left then, cutting in and shooting low into the area. The ball hit the base of the post and with the keeper floundering Terry Smith raced in and hit the ball against the knee of a defender on the line. The ball rebounded to Smith who off balance could only scoop over the bar.
Chelmsley were now restricted only to breakaways and in the 80th minute Canaries were indebted to a brilliant save from Bray when Bromley hit a long ball into the box found Keen unmarked and his goal bound header was somehow pushed round the post with a full length dive.
In the last 10 minutes both teams were content to settle for one point rather than risk losing one

PROGRAMME NOTES
Last Saturday saw us record our second double of the season and the 2-0 win over Highgate was the result of a fine team effort. Despite a determined second half performance Highgate failed to haul themselves back into the game and we earned another welcome two points to move to seventh place in the league.
MANAGERS COMMENTS
Fortunately, the enforced break of the previous week did not affect our performance against Highgate. The first half was a very even affair, but I thought we showed far more purpose in front of goal than Highgate. The two goals we scored were of the highest quality. The first from Winston Thompson was a superbly executed free kick into the top corner of the net. The second coming a minute from half time was the result of a clinical piece of finishing from Dave Keen. He latched onto a flick from Sherland Harewood, turned his marked and neatly lobbed the goalkeeper for a fine goal. The second half was a completely different game as Highgate pushed forward for almost the entire half. The team defended well and there were several goal mouth scrambles where someone always just managed to clear our lines. Highgate will think themselves unfortunate not to have scored, but I would rather put this down to good defensive work.
The result was all the more pleasing given that we had to make three enforced changes prior to the game. Lee Bromley (suspended) Warren Badger (injured) and Noel McGarry (sick) were unavailable and the re-shuffled team performed very well. The only real criticism that can be levelled is that on a number of occasions having won the ball our distribution let us down. I think we need to show a little more composure particularly when we are moving the ball out of defensive positions.

PROGRAMME NOTES
Last weeks 2-1 success against Evesham United was probably our best result since gaining promotion. Evesham came to the Pavilion as league leaders and with an unbeaten away league record. The win was all more notable since we had to fight back after conceding a goal in the twentieth minute. The game provided some measure of the progress we have made so far this season and have us revenge for an earlier defeat at Evesham.
MANAGERS COMMENTS
Before last Saturdays game against Evesham I would probably have been satisfied with a draw. Evesham have an excellent record this season and prior to the game had only suffered two league defeats. I thought Evesham started the stronger of the two sides and deservedly took the lead in the twentieth munute. The goal came from a quickly taken free kick and a loss of concentration on our part allowed Brain the freedom to convert from close ranger. The equaliser came following a fine run by Spencer Geroge who beat two players before slipping the ball to Warren Badge who slotted the ball past the keeper to record his first goal for the club. In an excellent second half a sweeping move from defence to attack was finished off by Dave Keen who hammered the ball home in superb fashion. In recent weeks Dave Keen has looked very sharp and is now back to the sort of form that was a feature of his play last season.
Supporters will have noticed two changes in last weeks line-up. Paul Vins (hamstring injury) and Tony Jeynes (sick) were unavailable of the game and this gave me the opportunity to blood our two recent signings, Andy Bell and Ian Stanners. I thought both players did very well and I was particulary pleased with the way Andy bell slotted into the right back position and confident wqy he dealt with Carty the Evesham winger. Lee Bromley completed his suspension missing this game.

Woeful Finishing And Sloppy Defending Costly
Woeful finishing and unusually sloppy defending cost Hinckley dear when they slipped to their second successive Midland Combination Premier Division defeat in a dramatic match at Middlefield Lane on Saturday.
In the first half, honours were territorially fairly even but in the period the Canaries allowed the visitors to run up a two goal advantage that was to prove crucial later.
Chelmsley's first goal came in the 27th minute when Winston Thompson picked the ball up just inside the Canaries' half and went on a run in which he beat four defenders before slipping the ball to Lee Bromley who netted from six yards.
The second goal, in the 40th minute came when Bromley made ground down the right and crossed for a completely unmarked Ian Stanners to head home from eight yards.
At the other end Hedgecock missed two good chances, first when he slipped two defenders but shot weakly at the keeper, and then after Wilson had set him up blasted wide from 10 yards.
Meanwhile Wilson playing with all the confidence of a player who had not scored in nine games put two excellent chances way over the bar.
SEVON TO ONE
In the first 14 minutes of the second half, the reporter's notebook showed Canaries seven corners, Chelmsley one, then drama struck.
Karl Johnson on the right put a delightful ball between two defenders in to the path of Hedgecock who before he could control the ball collided with keeper McGetherick.
It was the goalie who came off worst suffering severe concussion which ultimately led to an overnight stay in hospital in Nuneaton. After a six minute delay, Hedgecock recovered.
The Canaries sensed they had a chance to salvage the game and Bromley who took over the green shirt was beaten just two minutes later and, at long last it was Wilson who scored.
This goal led to another change of keeper assistant manager Peter Tonks coming on. The Canaries were now swarming all over the visitors and in the 67th minute Tonks proved how long it had been since he had played in goal by being penalised for rolling the ball in the area. From the resultant free kick and scramble in the box Karl Johnson headed Canaries level.
COOL HEAD NEEDED
Perhaps Manager Bill Moore should have moved himself into attack because if ever Canaries needed a cool head it was now.
The situation as Chelmsley defended their keeper was (a) get the ball into the box and (b) shoot on target but the FC rarely did either as they were virtually encamped in the Chelmsley half with the crowd baying for a goal.
Call it inexperience, call it over exuberance, it was to prove fatal when 12 minutes from time disaster struck. From Chelmsley's only concerted attack in the last 20 Hinckley failed to clear and the ball broke in the crowded area to Lynch who, from a good 20 yards, volleyed an unstoppable shot past Bray to give the Town both points.

A well taken goal by striker Gary Davidson in the first half showed us the way, and with his fellow top-scoring striker Dave Scriven notching two more in the second half gave us a comfortable 3-0 win. These two strikers seem to have got 'in the groove' just lately.
With Mickey Buttress back and buzzing in midfield and Noel McMenamin showing the form which makes him a threat to the opposition, together with the back four and keeper being very miserly in the last two games to opposition strikers, we have the quality to put a good side together and make further progress in the league.

11/02/1989 Kings Heath 0 Chelmsley Town 0
CHELMSLEY AGAIN failed to blend as a team giving a lacklustre performance in this goalless bore at Kings Heath, ending a run of six consecutive defeats.
With new boy Micky Cook in centre of midfield, Town pushed Winnie Thompson up front an Ian Stanners wide on the right giving pace to an attack who have only scored one goal in their three previous outings.
But it didn't work! Chelmsley continually failed to provide the due, and top scorer Dave Keen, with a quality pass.
Half the team were guilty of being caught in possession far too often and the match - against a poor opposition - deteriorated into a medley of mistakes.
In the first half, King's playing down the slope had much better of play and only alert keeping by Mick McGettrick and some solid defending, kept the scoresheet blank.
King's had won nine corner to Town's nil but they were guilty of inept finishing.
It was five minutes into the second half before Chelmsley forced a corner! A long ball to the far post was headed back by Thompson for Lee Bromley to shoot over the bar.
Soon after, a Steve Grady free-kick caused a goalmouth scramble. With boots flying everywhere Spencer George connected, but his shot went high and wide.
Chelmsley's best chance came after 75 minutes. A rare through ball to Stanners cut the defence in half, but as the teenager prepared to shoot, home player Seaton saved the day with a well timed tackle.
On the plus-side, Town's defence had held together and gave nothing away for the first time in eight matches!
PROGRAMME NOTES
Last weekend saw the first team put an end to a miserable run of six defeats when they drew 0-0 at Kings Heath in very difficult conditions. As the scoreline suggests, this was a very dour game and not one for the football purists. The sloping pitch and high win dictated the pattern of the game and chances were few and far between. However, manager Peter Quantrell will be pleased that we defended well and managed to keep a clean sheet and secure a well earned point.
MANAGERS COMMENTS
I was particularly pleased to see our recent poor spell come to an end in the draw at Kings Heath. Although we struggled to create very much we worked hard and defended very well. This was in stark contrast to our previous games.
New signing Mickey Cooke did very well in his first game and I am hoping to add Neale Chatwin from Paget Rangers to today's squad. Unfortunately, Sherland Harewood has decided to give up the game temporarily for personal reasons and his strength and undoubted ability will be sorely missed. Last weekend Winston Thompson played in a forward position and did very well despite not having many opportunities to shine.
