Coleshill Held By Chelmsley

Up against First Division side Coleshill, who had won three successive games, Chelmsley Town, without regular players Hemmings and Taylor, did well to earn a replay in the second round of the Midland Combination Challenge Cup. Chelmsley were slow to settle and Coleshill dominated but failed to accept scoring chances and Tipton should have given them the lead when he broke through the home rearguard but shot high and wide. Forbes and Brittle gradually began to get a grip on things in Chelmsley’s midfield and it was from a great through ball by Forbes that Mitchell went close to putting the Second Division club in front. Full back Campbell was left stranded by Mitchell’s speed and with keeper Hollins racing out to narrow the angle, the Chelmsley striker lobbed the ball over him, but it bounced agonisingly wide of the post. Chelmsley’s efforts were rewarded, however in the 41st minute. Mitchell again left Campbell in his wake and crossed the ball for Fielding to soar above central defender Hackett and power a header which Hollins could not hold and Fielding, following up, calmly tapped the ball home. Coleshill’s reply was immediate and effective. In the 43rd minute a centre from Woodward was not cleared and Jones crosses the ball back inside for Tipton to hook the ball over keeper Collins - the ball bouncing off the post into the net. Following the hectic pace of the first half the tempo slowed and proceedings developed into something of a midfield slog, and Coleshill brought on substitute Canning to bolster their attacks. Chelmsley defended in depth and deserved and deserved to get another bite at the cherry.

KINGSBURY'S FIRST HALF SHOW ROCKS CHELMSLEY

KINGSBURY received Chelmsley Town at Halloughton Grange and after a fast exciting game were good value for both points from a 4-2 win.

Kings paraded their two mid-week signings from Racing Warwick and they slotted into the side very well.

Kingsbury had a dream start with a goal after five minutes.  A Nigel Finney through ball was finished off in style by Steve Ketland.

Ten minutes later the same player was unlucky not to score again when from an acute angle he fired in a long shot which cannoned off both posts before being cleared.

After a couple of more scoring chances went begging Kings made it two on the half-hour.  New signing Russel Tibson beat the full back on the bye-line and knocked a beautiful ball inside to Steve Ketland who side-footed into the net.

Chelmsley started the second-half determined to get back into the game and after ten minutes they did just that, being awarded a penalty for a trip in the box.  The town centre forward made no mistake from the spot.

This goal really got Town going, and Kingsbury were forced to defend sternly for 15 minutes.

On the half-hour Kingsbury got the goal they needed to ease the pressure Dorian Dugmore started the move in the penalty area and the ball was worked up to the left side to Tibson who chipped the keeper from the edge of the box.

This took some of the fight out of town and Kings started to push forward again and John Farley scored their fourth with an angled drive.

Five minutes from time Chelmsley pulled one back when, from a corner, the ball was scrambled over the line.

Next match, October 31st, 1981, Alvechurch v. Kingsbury, k.o. 2.45pm.

Early pressure from Coleshill resulted in Dyer missing from just two yards out. Coleshill continued to attack but the Chelmsley Town back four were dealing well with everything the the home team threw at them. Jones had a shot scrape the crossbar. Hollins was never really tested in the Coleshill goal but after a high tackle on him in the 49th minute, Chelmsley’s Jenkins was sent off to change his studs. Coleshill continued to press forward and the visitors defence was continually under pressure.

Chelmsley Put Out Coleshill

Chelmsley manager Phil Davies left out top scorer John Mitchell on heating that the striker had requested a transfer to Moor Green, but his new look line-up rose to the occasion in this second round replay to oust Coleshill from the Midland Combination Challenge Cup. Coleshill had the upper hand in the opening stages, but Dyer miskicked from only six yards out and Jones had a shot kicked off the line. Sawojka threatened danger to Chelmsley’s defence on several occasions, using his height to advantage but Brittle worked hard to get Chelmsley back in the running. Near the interval Sawojka saw a header saved by Collins and Jones shot wide when well placed. Home keeper Hollins was injured diving at the feet of Jenkins, but Chelmsley were lucky when Tipton shot past Collins, only to see Newton clear the ball off the line. Ward came to Chelmsley’s rescue at the start of the second half, scooping the ball off the line, after Jones had rounded Collins. An injury to Ward forced him to leave the field and Chelmsley had to shuffle their defence, with substitute Fielding entering the fray, but they took the lead when Brittle’s pass found Hawker clear on the left flank and his speculative cross-shot eluded Hollins, the ball dipping into the far corner of the net. Coleshill rallies strongly and a corner from Dyer was headed against the crossbar by Russell. From the rebound Tipton’s shot was deflected into the net by Newton. Back at the other end Hollins saved well from Nabbs and Jenkins and in the 68th minute Coleshill took off Canning and sent on substitute defender Woolley as they found themselves under pressure. Fielding and Andrews were prominent in Chelmsley’s attacks and it came as no surprise when they regained the lead. Jenkins broke through and his shot was parried by Hollins, but he pounced on the rebound to chip the ball home. Brittle went close to making it 3-1 shooting inches over the bar, before Coleshill’s Tipton almost forced extra time with a shot that Collins saved at full stretch. Hemmings and Moore defended expertly to ensure a fine victory for Chelmsley. Coleshill’s manager Colin Holder said after the match, “Full credit to Chelmsley, but we missed far too many scoring chances. With only one win in the last five matches I must now consider making changes.” This Saturday Coleshill visit Walsall Sportsco in a Midland Combination First Division game.
