Reflecting for a moment in the season, we had some disappointments, but overall it was a magnificent season for us.  Not only did we win the league, but we were President's Cup Finalists and semi-finalists in the County Vase.  Everyone involved is anxious to maintain that success.  At the clubs presentation night ALAN MOULTON crowned a fine season by picking up the Player Of The Year Award, and DAVE KEEN received top goal scorer award.

Congratulations are due to Manager, Peter Quantrill who has been voted Midland Combination Manager of the month for February.  This follows wins over Solihull Borough (7-1), Dudley Sports (4-1), Shelfield United (4-0) and title chasing West Heath (7-1).  At the home game with Bromsgrove Athletico representatives of the leagues Management Committee made a presentation to Peter in recognition of this achievement.

Supporters will notice that a number of changes are being made to the ground in preparation of next season.  New dressing rooms are shortly to be constructed so that the existing bar/lounge area can be extended.  In addition the pitch is being moved neared to the Club House and the stand will be resited on the opposite side of the ground.

The club received a boost recently with the announcement of a sponsorship deal with Steeles Estate Agents based locally in Station Road, Marston Green.  We hope our association with Peter Steele is a long and happy one.

MATCH REPORT - Midland Combination Division 1

Strollers' four-man midfield took an early grip of this game against the league leaders and Dawes saw his 3rd minute effort go wide of an upright.  O'Shaughnessy and Chambers also went close in a period of sustained Strollers pressure.  This was rewarded on 28 minutes when Dawes headed Strollers in front after McGetrick has parried Chambers' original header.  The lead was doubled six minutes later following a brilliant run from the back by Jackson who got to the by-line and pulled the ball back for O'Shaughnessy to rifle home from 18-yards.  In the 38th minute O'Shaughnessy again went close as he, Perry, Gough and Chambers dominated the midfield.  Half-time score - Chelmsley T.  0 Bloxwich S. 2.

Three minutes after the interval the home side pulled a goal back when a half-cleared corner was scrambled home by Keen.  Seven minutes after this boost they were level at 2-2 when Keen was again on hand to turn in a cross from Bromley.  The injured Chambers was soon afterwards replaced by Webb, who was making his first appearance since injury at the end of the 1986-87 season.  Chelmsley then scored a third goal and must have thought that their fight-back had earned them both points.  These thoughts were shattered in the 78th minute when Jackson's centre was headed past his own goalkeeper by Vins.  Taylor, Wilkes, Lakin and Nicholls then tightened up the Strollers' defence to make sure there was no further scoring.

MANAGERS COMMENTS

In recent games out league form has been outstanding culminating in the 7-1 drubbing of title chasing West Heath.  The game marked John Bodens first hat trick for the club and Dave Keen was again amongst the goals.  In recent weeks Dave Keen and Sherland Harewood have demonstrated the good understanding that exists between them and have been scoring freely.  Unfortunately, the West Heath game saw us collect two nasty injuries to Lee Bromley and Noel McGarry, both players missed the Brewood game and could be out for serval more weeks.

MANAGERS COMMENTS

When we went a goal up midway through the first half it looked as though we were heading for another win, but goals either side of half time put Brewood in a commanding position.  In between the goals Mick McGettrick pulled off a great save from the penalty spot after Alan Moulton was alleged to have handled the ball.

Two further goals in the final five minutes, as we pushed forward, finally killed off our hopes of reaching the Final.  This was a game in which we never played well, particularly in midfield where we were outfought.  Despite this we created a host of clear cut chances but couldn't apply the finishing touch.

TOWN FALL AT FINAL HURDLE

MIDLAND COMBINATION 1st Division leaders, Chelmsley Town found the handicap of playing understrength too much to overcome in their Birmingham Challenge Vase semi-final tie.

Both full backs - Lee Bromley and Noel McGarry - were missing along with two cup-tied players, against Banks Brewery League outfit Brewood FC.

Prolific scorer Sherland Harewood put Chelmsley 1-0 up early in the first half but a defensive error let in Brewood soon after.  Ten minutes before the break goal-keeper Mick McGettrick kept Town's hopes alive saving a penalty.

Second half pressure by Brewood soon put them 2-1 ahead and a series of chances created by Town failed to equalise.

In an all or nothing last few minutes Chelmsley's attempts to level the scores left gaps in their defence, enabling two swift Brewood strikes to finally finish them off.

This result still leaves Chelmsley with a chance of the 'double' - division Championship and Presidents Cup.

Town are currently unbeaten in the league since 15th August and have just completed their best ever month's series of results, winning manager Pete Quantrell the Midland Combination Manager of the Month Award.

Victories over Shelfield 4-0, Solihull Borough Res 7-0, Dudley Sports 4-1, and last week, an emphatic 7-1 defeat of fellow promotion candidates, West Heath United.  Goals from Johnny Boden (3), Dave Keen (2), Tony Frankel, and Les Poyner pushed Town's league tally to 58, with 28 against.

At their next home match - 19th March, k.o. 2.45 - versus possible cup final opponents Bromsgrove Athletico, manager Peter Quantrell will receive his monthly award - a cut glass tankard - off league representatives.

CHELMSLEY CHASING TREBLE SUCCESS (by Neil White)

Chelmsey Town are bidding to add two more pieces of silverware to their trophy cabinet as they continue their surge for the first division title.

The free-scoring table-toppers will meet either Bromsgrove Athletico of Wythall in the final of the Presidents Cup.

And today they were hoping to claim the scalp of Brewood in the Birmingham Challenge Vase.

That follows a brilliant sequence of results which has helped manager Pete Quantrell claim the Midland Combination manager of the month award for February.

In that month, Town disposed of Shelfield 4-0, Solihull Borough Reserves 7-0, Dudley Sports 4-1 and fellow title challengers West Heath 7-1.

Chelmsley have smashed a staggering 58 goals in 19 league games this season.

Chelmsley have, incredibly, been unbeaten in the league since August 15 and if they keep up their current form they do look invincible.

Dave Keen and Sherland Harewood have been the main source of Town's seemingly endless flow of goals rapping in 49 between them so far this season.

Midfielder Les Poyner has also been a regular scorer while Johnny Boden improved his tally with a dynamic hat-trick against West Heath.

Gough praised coach Phil Judge who has been mainly responsible for helping the strikers improve their style.

He said: 'Phil has inspired the lads and improved their confidence'.

Off the field, Chelmsley are prepared for promotion with the development of a stylish-looking grandstand.

'We will be ready when the time comes, it is just a question of keeping a steading nerve on the pitch for the remaining games', said Gough.
